Athetoid Cerebral Palsy

Athetoid cerebral palsy generally causes involuntary “twitchy” type movements. It affects about 10% of people with Cerebral Palsy
Athetoid cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the cerebellum or basal ganglia. Children who have this type of cerebral palsy often have difficulty speaking, feeding, reaching and grasping and gripping items.

One difference from Spastic Cerebral Palsy is that the muscles may not always be tight as they are with spastic CP. With Athetoid CP the muscles may change from being tight to being loose. You also may see some difficulty with mouth control affecting speech, and swallowing. This may present itself with “Tongue Thrusting”.
